LAFAYETTE – Joey Kirkland of West Monroe and Charlie Flynn of C. E. Byrd both carded two-under-par 70 scores Monday and share the individual lead after the first round of the Division I boys Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA State Golf Championships.

Kirkland had four birdies in a four-under 32 back side and Flynn had a one-under 35 on each side of the 6,348-yard par-72 The Wetlands course, good enough for a one-stroke lead over Payne Johnson of Byrd and Chance Queen of Alexandria going into Tuesday’s final round.

Flynn and Johnson’s subpar scores, coupled with an even-par 72 from Jake Marler and a 74 from Luke Atchison, gave Byrd an impressive one-under-par 287 score and a 12-stroke lead over Alexandria in the team chase. Byrd had won three straight state titles before finishing third in last year’s Division I tournament.
