CARENCRO -- Carter Toms carded a bogey-free five-under-par 67 here Wednesday and helped pace his C. E. Byrd team to the first-day lead in the boys’ Division I bracket of the Allstate Sugar Bowl LHSAA state golf championships.

Toms eagled the 528-yard par-five fourth hole and then added three birdies on the back side to take a six-stroke lead in the individual chase heading into Thursday’s final round. Teammate Philip Barbaree, the returning individual champion, is alone in second place after posting a one-over 73 over the 6,516-yard par-72 Farm d’Allie course.

Byrd, the two-time defending team champion in Division I, also got 78 scores from Marshall Laborde and Reed Sikes on the way to a 296 team score. That was good enough for an 11-stroke lead over St. Thomas More at 307, while West Monroe and 2015 runner-up Catholic High of Baton Rouge are tied for third at 310.

Toms, who finished tied for fifth in last year’s individual chase, birdied the par-five 11th and the par-four 14th holes on the back side and added a birdie on the par-five 18th hole in a 34-33 round.

Girls: At Youngsville, Captain Shreve’s Rachel Dupree shot a 78 and is in fourth place at the Division I girls state golf tournament. Dupree is two shots off the lead.

As a team, Byrd is fourth at 194. Sulphur leads at 158.
