Byrd head football coach Mike Suggs today released the Yellow Jackets' 2017 schedule. Byrd will play nine regular season games, three non-district and six District 1-5A games, and will have an open date in week 10.

Before the start of the regular season the Yellow Jackets will line up against someone other than a teammate. Byrd will square off against the West Monroe Rebels in a referee's scrimmage on August 11 at Independence Stadium. The following Friday, Aug. 18 Byrd will take on Ruston in the annual preseason scrimage. The Jackets will take on the arch rival Captain Shreve Gators in the Jamboree on Aug. 25.

The Yellow Jackets will open up the 2017 season with the Calvary Baptist Academy Cavaliers on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Lee Hedges Stadium. The Cavaliers defeated the Jackets 34-14 last year for the first time in four tries. Byrd will once again compete in the Landers Dodge Battle on the Border High School Football Showcase at Independence Stadium in week two. Byrd will face the Moss Point, Miss. Tigers on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 7 p.m. In week three, the Jackets will travel down to Sulphur to take on the Golden Tornados at Matt Walker Stadium. Kickoff for the final non-district game is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 15.

Week four brings about the start of district play for the Jackets. Byrd will travel eastward on I-20 to the piney woods of east Bossier Parish to battle the Haughton Buccaneers at Harold Harlan Field on Friday, Sept. 22. Byrd hopes to continue its recent success against Haughton, having won six straight over the Buccaneers since they moved into Class 5A.

Thursday, Sept. 28 brings the annual “Backyard Brawl” between Byrd and Captain Shreve. It’s not only Shreveport’s best rivalry, but it’s one where the Jackets will be looking to avenge last year's 34-7 loss to the Gators. Despite last year's loss, Byrd has dominated Shreve having won 21 of the last 23 games. Byrd will be the home team in this year's game.

On Thursday, Oct. 5, the Jackets will face the Southwood Cowboys at Lee Hedges Stadium, however, the Cowboys will be the home team. Byrd has beaten Southwood in 23 of the last 25 meetings, including last season's 42-7 Jackets win.

The City of Byrd will celebrate Homecoming 2017 on Friday, Oct. 13 when the Jackets play host to the Parkway Panthers. It will not be your stereotypical homecoming matchup by any stretch of the imagination as the Panthers feature two of the top recruits in the country in the pass-catch duo of quarterback Justin Rogers and receiver Terrace Marshall.

In week eight, Byrd travels to Broadacres Road and the campus of Evangel Christian Academy to take on the Eagles. It was not a pleasant trip to west Shreveport last year for Byrd as Evangel pummelled the Jackets 52-0. The Eagles would go on to capture the Division I State Championship, the 14th in school history.

The Airline Vikings travel across the Red River to Lee Hedges Stadium in week nine. The Jackets captured a thrilling 36-34 triple-overtime win over the Vikings last year. The win extended Byrd's winning streak over Airline to 14 straight games.

Byrd has an open date in week 10, but will once again compete in the 13-team LHSAA Division I Playoffs.
