Byrd athletic director Mike Suggs reached into south Louisiana for a girls’ basketball coach with championship pedigree in seeking a replacement for longtime coach Toni Martinez.

On Wednesday, Suggs hired Joanna Tate to replace Martinez, who will be an assistant at Airline next fall. Tate was the point guard on Holden’s 2006 state championship team.

“I’m extremely excited about taking over the program at Byrd,” Tate told The Times. “It’s a big opportunity for me, and I’ve heard nothing but great things about the school.”

After playing for Pam and Craig Forbes at Holden, she moved on to Louisiana College where she played for the late Janice Joseph-Richard, a Louisiana Sports Hall of Famer.

She plans to report to Shreveport soon and be involved in summer workouts with the returning members of the Lady Jackets.

“Since my playing and coaching days, I’ve been defense oriented because that’s what wins you games,” Tate said. “I’ve always been big on being in shape and playing great defense.”
