Byrd head coach Rusty Johnson saw his team win the Jack Clayton Invitational.

Byrd faces a daunting task this season in trying to replace one of the best senior classes in recent memory.

Coach Rusty Johnson always expected a slow start, but he’s cautiously optimistic about the Yellow Jackets’ progress so far in December. They capped off a solid week on Saturday by overwhelming North DeSoto 86-53 to win the Jack Clayton Invitational title at Haughton for the fourth straight year.

“I knew it was going to take a while to get these guys going because there’s so much inexperience,” Johnson said. “But they’re starting to buy in to what I’m trying to make them do and I was impressed.”

The Yellow Jackets lost four college players to graduation, including The Times’ Best of Preps Basketball Player of the Year and Rice freshman Chad Lott. This group doesn’t have that kind of individual talent, but it has enough depth that 11 players contributed to Byrd’s 46 points before halftime.
