fter being edged out of the Shreveport City Championship by one point last year, the Byrd Yellow Jackets reclaimed the city championship at Evangel on Monday night.

Byrd compiled an impressive 174.0 points to capture the title.

Coach Mark Yawn was proud for his guys, but sees some room to grow in preparation for next week’s LHSAA State Wrestling Championship in Bossier City.

“Well, I always think there is room for improvement but I’m proud of the guys,” Yawn said. “They’ve work hard. They wanted it back. They’ve put in the time. They’ve put in the effort. The coaches have worked hard with each of them. I think we’ve done as well as we can expect them to do.”

Byrd reached the finals in nine of the 14 weight classes.  The Yellow Jackets took home five titles from Matthew Born (113), Demetri Teddlie (126), Jacob Yawn (132), Cordre Tolliver (160), and Anassas Anderson (195).

Evangel took a second-place finish with 117 points. Datremecia “Trey” White continued to dominate the 285-pound division as he picked up another tournament title after winning the Northwest Louisiana Regional tournament over the weekend.
