Jerry Byrd, Jr. - Special to The Times

This column started out as an article comparing the pay for local high school track and field coaches in northwest Louisiana. That didn’t seem very important after the last week’s Wesley-Payne Relays and witnessing the injury to Byrd sophomore Becca Brown in the 100-meter hurdles.

All injuries are bad, and there were several other athletes who were injured at last Thursday’s meet. I don’t know their story.

My involvement in track has allowed me the opportunity to watch Brown progress in the sport over the last three years.

The first time I saw her compete was two years ago. She was in the eighth-grade at Caddo Middle Magnet. My daughter was a sixth-grader on the Lady Stallion team, which began a win streak that year at the first meet of the season at Mansfield High School.
